elemental paintings (ca. 1953)

Although not conceived of as a series by the artist, this body of work, many of which are no longer extant, is sometimes referred to as the “Elemental Paintings.” These works are often contained in wood frames and were made with unconventional materials including clay, dirt, gold, grass, lead, mold, and tissue paper.
